John Keyes, Assistant Dockmaster
When not on the docks of Charlestown Marina, you may find Assistant Dockmaster John Keyes out sailing, reading, or tuning into a Boston sports game. Get to know John and be sure to say hello when you visit this summer!
How long have you been at the marina?
I've been here since October of 2025. But I've been with Ocean Havens for about a year. I worked at Fan Pier Marina before coming to Charlestown Marina.
What is your earliest memory of being on a boat?
I grew up fishing with my grandfather and dad in Marblehead, MA. I don't remember my first time being on a boat, but I've always said I knew how to drive a boat before I knew how to drive a car.
What music is on your summer playlist?
It's a lot of Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers, and Billy Strings.
What is your favorite meal to cook?
I'm proud of my grilled salmon. I serve it with mashed potatoes and roasted broccoli.
What is one place on your travel bucket list?
I really want to go backpacking in Mongolia. I'm hoping to plan that trip this winter with my friends.
Do you have any advice for a first-time boater?
I'd say the biggest thing is to take lessons if you're not fully confident operating your vessel. Always do research and check the weather before heading out to be prepared for anything!
What is your favorite restaurant in the area?
I really like Square Deli in Everett. It's sort of a hole in the wall type of place, but they have really good pizza and some of the best cheesesteaks around!
How do you spend a day off?
I recently bought a sailboat, so I'll be doing a lot of sailing this summer. I always like to be on the water, whether it's out fishing or going to the beach.
Which sports teams do you cheer for?
I am a die-hard New England fan! I root for the Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox, and Bruins - in that order.
What is your favorite part about your job?
My absolute favorite part, besides being outside and on the water, is making connections with people in the marina community. I am a people person, I love talking to everyone - whether it's doing a favor for a boater or just seeing the same people every day!
